Our Approach
We proudly uphold empirically supported traditional ABA methods, yet we are driven by a passion for compassion. Our commitment extends beyond behavior change; we embrace a more inclusive approach that values each person as a whole
Acceptance, mindfulness, spirituality, and personal values provide successful alternatives to typical reinforcers. Introducing these more compassionate elements provides a new set of tools to what we have considered traditional behavioral interventions.
Third Wave ABA considers each family member as part of the process and enhancing family wellness is part of how we change lives, not just behavior.
-
At Third Wave, we believe that problem behavior occurs when an individual lacks a socially acceptable way of getting what they want and need. ABA is the application of decades of evidence-based treatment to behaviors that create barriers to learning and making friends. Behaviors such as tantrums, aggression, and inflexibility lead to the isolation of the learner and frustration from the very people our learners look to for support. Using an assessment to determine the triggers, behaviors of concern as well as a learner’s strengths, a plan is developed to create successful behavioral alternatives which are taught directly to the learner by a skilled therapist. ABA is considered the gold stand for treating behavioral challenges related to autism but the learner's individual desire to engage in the social norms at their own comfort level is considered deeply in the process.
-
Third-wave therapies come from the field of contextual behavioral analysis and are used also in counseling and psychology. These traditions prioritize holistic health and well-being over the reduction or elimination of unwanted behaviors, feelings, and emotions. Rather than viewing all behavior through the lens of the triggers and consequences, the contextual process of the behavior is explored. We ask how the belief or reaction was learned and in what context. Third-wave technologies include concepts such as paying attention to our thoughts and learning to recognize when our personal safety rules have become our own worst enemy. These evidence-based strategies enhance traditional ABA approaches by including Relational Frame Theory (RFT), the PEAK Comprehensive Assessment and Modules (PCA), DNA-V, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), and essential mindfulness.
-
Compassionate ABA is taking the time to build rapport and trust with a client and their family. Learning what drives both the individual and the family and working together to develop a program that feels approachable and sustainable. It’s imperative to understand how each family is doing as a whole and at what level a family is ready to engage in the process. Every family has a unique set of circumstances that brought them to our door. A child may even have a history of trauma that is amplifying their challenges. Our passion for compassion will lead the way.
-
Remember the old rule that if the plane goes down a parent should take their oxygen mask first? It can feel counterintuitive and maybe even selfish. It is crucial in raising any child but particularly those raising a child with special needs, to be regulated when our children need us most. One of the hurdles of parenting is that it is the caregivers responsibility to notice when things are going south, and “oxygen” is needed. When a situation starts to escalate it can feel like there is little to no warning. No mask drops out of the ceiling signaling for us to take a break. How then, can we prepare ourselves for the unknown? We learn to anticipate the situation, check in with our own system, take a breath and create new patterns to soothe and regulate. Together we will learn when to grab the mask.
